Some stationary applications, such as oil and gas pumping/compressing stations, power generation and agricultural irrigation systems, need fluid level management systems to ensure the engine is always lubricated. These stations are typically found in remote areas with several applications, spread out over many acres, being maintained by just one person.

For this reason, the REN Fluid Level Management System was developed. This system allows you to pick and choose components to build your own system to meet your specific needs.

Oil level regulator

The oil level regulator is the foundation of the fluid level management system. It provides a visual line-of-site into the oil pan to easily see the oil level in the sump.

The regulator can also incorporate an integrated switch tied to an external clean oil tank, adding oil when the sump reaches a certain level.

Since uptime is critical to these applications, the oil level regulator ensures the engine is always producing as intended.

Slow flow meter

The second key component of a good preventive maintenance program, the slow flow meter allows the maintenance manager to measure exactly how much clean oil is added to the system each month, especially when the meter is used in combination with an oil level regulator and a clean oil tank.

Maintaining accurate records of the add oil rate will assist in determining when to schedule an engine rebuild, possibly avoiding an engine failure. The meter is available with both analog and digital readouts; the digital readout can be wired into a wireless system to allow for remote data retrieval.

Continuous oil change module

The continuous oil change module can be combined with the other components to allow used oil to be burned as fuel. This provides the benefit of adding clean oil to the system as well as all of the benefits of an updated additive package.

Adding clean oil to the system can be especially important in some oil and gas fields where acidic sour gas is burned in the engine, thereby quickly reducing the Total Base Number (TBN) of the oil.

Additionally, added oil can minimise the impact on the oil drain and preventive maintenance interval.

You can combine all of these components together into one system, or pick and choose which of these building blocks are the optimal components for your maintenance system.

Liquid level switch

A REN component separate to the above system is the liquid level switch.

This product uses a simple switch to signal a shut-off valve, or to signal the opening of a valve to fill a necessary fluid.

What is a by-pass filter?

A by-pass filter, not to be confused with a by-pass valve, is a high efficiency low flow filter which filters a small percent of the engine oil at one time. By-pass filters are very effective at removing the smaller wear-causing contaminates due to their high efficiency of filtering smaller contaminates. By-pass filters are always used in conjunction with a full flow filter.

What is a full flow filter?

Full flow filters filter 100% of the oil which goes through the engine.

What is the by-pass setting for lube and hydraulic filters?

Each lube filter and hydraulic filter system is equipped with a by-pass valve to ensure main components in the system are sufficiently lubricated if oil is cold or the filter is blocked by excessive contamination. The by-pass valve can be located in the filter or filter head. Depending on the OEM manufacturer's specification, the setting of the by-pass valve can differ. The Cummins Filtration catalogue lists the setting of this valve (14.7 PSI = 1 bar). If no setting is mentioned, no by-pass valve is mounted in the filter.

What is the anti-drainback valve for lube and hydraulic filters?

The anti-drainback valve is fitted in filters for applications where potential risk of the filter running empty exists. This situation has to be avoided otherwise wear will occur on the moving parts as these parts are not yet lubricated by oil.

Can a by-pass filter have a by-pass valve?

No, by-pass filters do not require by-pass valves. A by-pass valve is required in full-flow filtration to ensure the engine is lubricated when oil is cold or the filter is plugged. If oil is cold, the by-pass filter will receive less oil flow and in case it is plugged, will not function anymore.

What is the purpose of the hot melt beads on the outside of the element pack in lube applications?

The hot melt is applied to the surface of the element pack of lube filters to prevent the pleats from being pushed together when the element pack is subjected to fluid flow. Without hot melt being added to some applications, the pleats can be pushed together, resulting in short filter life due to the total surface of the media not being used for filtration.

What's the difference between full-flow and by-pass lube filters?

A full-flow oil filter is mounted in full flow of oil, meaning all oil entering the engine is filtered. In full-flow filters, Cummins Filtration uses cellulose media (40 µm absolute) or upgraded media, such as StrataPore (25 µm absolute). A by-pass filter is mounted in the by-pass, so approximately 10% of the lube oil flow is passing through this filter. Cummins Filtration offers high efficiency "real depth filtration" by means of its stacked disc media. As the average size of wear particles in engines are in the range of 5 to 30 µm, these particles cannot be completely filtered out by full-flow filters as these filters would be too restrictive. Therefore, the use of a by-pass filter, such as Cummins Filtration's LF777 or Centrifugal filtration system, will keep oil cleaner and result in less wear on moving parts of engines.

How tight should a lube filter be installed?

Installation instructions on the side of the filter should be followed to properly install the filter. The sealing gasket should be lubricated with clean oil, the filter should then be screwed on until the gasket makes contact with the sealing surface on the head, and then the filter should be tightened the correct amount of turns as specified on the side of the filter.

What are some ways to extend lube service intervals?

What is a micron?

A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre or a millionth of a metre or .000039 of an inch. Micron is the unit of measure used to determinate the size of particles in a fluid which are filtered out by the filter.

What is the difference between Absolute and Nominal micron rating?

Micron rating is the size of particles which are filtered out by filters at a certain efficiency. When this efficiency is at least 98.6%, we speak about absolute micron rating/filtration. Nominal micron rating is just a commercial trick for all efficiencies lower than 98.6%, meaning that for the same micron rating (for example 10 µ) in the case of nominal rating, not all particles will be captured in the filter as in the case of absolute micron rating.

Why doesn't Cummins Filtration publish micron ratings for all its filters?

Generally this is not necessary. Cummins Filtration filters are designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications.
