Low sulfur diesel and biodiesel fuel is particularly vulnerable to water contamination during transport and storage. Once water gets in the diesel fuel system, it creates the opportunity for an invasion of microorganisms. Microbes attack at the fuel/water interface, where they thrive and multiply. Once established, they entrench themselves in a thick layer of slimy deposits and create a number of troublesome maintenance problems, including premature fuel filter plugging, hazy fuel, clogged injectors, as well as fuel storage tank corrosion and leakage.
